The rocker chic look consists of black, dark sunglasses, fringed scarves, chunky jewels, and a lot of attitude. It doesn’t matter if you don’t bang the drums or listen to bands with names like “The Bloody Knife,” rocker-style is an infusion of your own personality and original style. I’ll never forget that Sex and the City episode where Miranda’s office introduced casual Fridays. Her closeted gay co-worker showed up in tight leather black pants and a sheer black tank. Needless to say, her conservative New York law firm nixed casual Fridays from there on out.

Thankfully I work in an industry where every day is casual Friday. If I were a lawyer or salesgirl or some other kind of professional that had to dress to the nines everyday, I’d go bananas. If you are one of the corporate big-wigs who has to dress to impress at the office, casual Friday is a gift from the heavens above. Before rolling out of bed in your smelly sweatpants, take a look at our tips to be casual but still office appropriate.

1. Casual does not equal unprofessional. Keep the logo tees and marijuana leaves tucked away in your closet. If you are wondering … is this appropriate … ? The answer is usually always, just don’t wear it.  

2. Wrinkles, stains, and tears are never ok at the office. Your clothes should be clean, wrinkle-free, and fresh smelling. This is a rule you should take with you wherever you go, not just the office.

3. What’s the policy? Check your handbook and see if jeans, tanktops, and other questionable attire are cool. 

4. Skin is a sin at the office. Exposed midriffs, tube tops, and cleavages are a no no. (Save that for Friday night at the club.)

5. Avoid flip flops. Unless there is a beach party happening at the office, stick to work appropriate footwear. 

6. Sundresses and skirts. A great option for the ladies is casual cotton dresses and skirts. They are comfortable, casual, and corporate cool.

7. Khakis and polos. Guys should choose khakis and polos over shorts and a tee.

Think about your field, your office culture, location, and position before busting out the “Jesus is My Homie” tee. Clearly you know your office vibe best, so dress in a way where you (and your co-workers) will feel comfortable and accepted. As long as everyone feels respected, it’s all good in the hood.

How many mornings do you wake up, take a half-eyed look at your over-flowing closet and say, “I have NOTHING to wear!”? Personally, I say those five little words at least five out seven days of the week. (The other two days, I roll into sweatpants, make fried eggs, and veg on the sofa for the majority of the day and say the words closer to evening time.) Fortunately, I have a mental library of go-to, no-fail outfits stored up in my tired little brain. I’ve compiled my favorite unfailing handy dandy ‘fits to always look flawlessly fabulous. (Or at least not like a train wreck who overslept and had nothing to wear.)

Black and White

Black pants, white shirt=gorgeous. White pants, black shirt=stunning. Black and white, the colors of oreos, the colors of the first photograph, the colors of salt and pepper–essential, consistently chic, and always sleek. From skirts to shorts, you can never, ever go wrong with classic black and white.

Jeans + Tee

Perfectly fitting jeans and a basic tee shirt are the bread and butter of a woman’s wardrobe. It’s a staple, timeless, and sexy.  Jeans and a tee are the perfect way to exude confidence and style.

Skinny-legged Pants and a Flowy Top

I think this was the first fashion rule my sister taught me back in 1989. Whenever you wear something tight on the top, wear something less-tight on the bottom. Whenever you wear something tight on the bottom, wear something less-tight on the top. Just yesterday I wore my hip-hugging skinny-legged black pants and a flowy-checkered blouse. I looked pretty cute if I’d say so myself.

Jersey Knit Dress + Knee-High Boots

I adore dresses, especially solid-colored jersey-knit dresses. They are comfortable, feminine, and adorable. To amp up the style I pair my dresses with boots.

Jeans + Heels

There are few things more sexy than a confident woman in jeans and high heels.

Simple Accessories

Whenever I wear big earrings, I don’t wear a necklace. I only wear one to two rings max per hand. If I wear an over-the-top necklace, I go light on everything else. While I adore accessories as much as the next fashionista, sometimes it’s just too much. Carefully chosen accessories worn with restraint always create an effortlessly stylish look.
