Dear Oligo Editor: Will I ever find the perfect bridesmaid dresses?

Dear Oligo Editor-

I’m engaged and couldn’t be happier about my marrying the man of my dreams; but the stress of planning a wedding has me on the verge of a serious bridezilla moment at least five times a day! My newest crisis is picking a dress that all six of my bridesmaids will love and look great in. Throw in the fact that they’re all different heights, sizes, complexions, etc., and I’m at a COMPLETE loss. Help!
— Bride to Be

Dear BTB-

Congrats to you and your future hubby on the engagement—we know you’ll make a ravishing couple! And though the stress leading up to the big day may tempt you to pull a Britney and elope in Vegas, there is a light at the end of the wedding planning tunnel—a fabulous soiree where you’re the center of attention and officially become the Mrs.  You’ll look amazing, and there are several ways to make sure your bridal party does, too.

While many brides insist on having the entire bridal party wearing the same dress, being open to letting each girl pick her own style can ease some of your dress shopping woes. Even with different frocks, a uniform look can be achieved by picking similar fabrics and colors. If your budget permits, look into hiring a seamstress that can whip up a custom design for each girl. Also, Designers like twobirds and Butter by Nadia offer dresses that can be wrapped in several different ways for look that both cohesive and individual.

Another option is to consider a non-traditional look like a cocktail length gown or a basic A-line dress. Keep in mind that simple designs are more likely to flatter all your bridesmaids, whether they’re short, tall, super thin or curvy. Your choice of fabric is also key.  Satin and silk are notoriously unforgiving, so consider fabrics that are kinder to female frame, like jersey or taffeta.

Try not to let all the wedding hoopla drive you loco—I’m sure it will be picture perfect. Happy shopping, and may and your sweetheart live happily ever after.
