Dear Editor—

Each year it seems to me that just when I can finally afford that cute sundress/short skirt/fabulous crop pant I’ve been admiring/craving/lusting after all summer—hello end-of-season sales!—it’s also time to figure out how to get the mothball smell out of my sweaters. I’m not in favor of global warming, but still I’d love to extend sundress season by a month or two. Any ideas?

Sincerely,
Loving Summer

Dear Lovely–

I have one word for you: layers. Followed by some other words: tights, boots, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and scarves. Though I reside slightly south of the Mason Dixon line, I still experience that unfortunate drop in temperature known as fall followed by that wonderful dearth of degrees known as winter. I’ve found the key for switching my summer frocks into fall fashions is the judicious application of layers. I start with my favorite Banana Republic long-sleeved tee followed by my favorite color-blocked Calvin Klein sundress, and top it all with the cabled cardi I picked up at Macy’s last winter. Add some tights—a great way to add texture and pattern, especially if the rest of your outfit’s monochromatic—and boots to keep your tootsies warm, thus insuring that you can have your sartorial cake and stay toasty too. (Tights and boots work with crop pants too; I’d recommend staying monochromatic to extend the line of the leg.) I also like to add a pop of color around my face with a brightly colored scarf—cotton for the not-as-cold days and cashmere or other knit for the frostier ones.

4 days left: “Celeb Stylista” Contest! by Crystal85 featuring Lipsy

As for jewelry, I tend to forgo necklaces if I’m rocking a scarf, but I’ve found that summer bangles look just as soigne over a close-fitting sleeve as they do on a bare arm. You may want to try out your earrings-scarf combination before heading out the door to make sure you don’t end up spending most of the time fidgeting as you try to untangle said earrings from said scarf. A special note about rings: oversized baubles can sometimes snag knits, so you may want to pop them on after you’ve arrived at your destination.

EVERY DAY IS A FASHION SHOW by ♥ ReKa™♥ featuring Marc by Marc Jacobs

Of course, one of the dangers of layering is that you could end up looking like the little brother in A Christmas Story. (“I can’t move my arms!”) So I suggest you keep the inner layers on the thin side with a chunky sweater topper. Or check out of the many thinner-than-air versions of the down vest that are popular this time of year. And not to get all scientific, know-it-ally on you, but even if you’re not trying to stretch out your summer(wear), layers are the way to go since all that nice heat generated by your body gets trapped between ‘em making sure you can get thru the winter looking haute and feeling hot.

p.s. For more tips, check out this post from the Oligoville archives.

Dear Editor,

So I was the girl in high school who spent a lot of time gazing longingly at the bad boys, wishing I could do more than choke out an occasional “Sure you can copy my homework.” These days I know that Mr. Nice can most definitely be Mr. Right . . . but I still spend a lot of time gazing longingly at that bad boys closet staple—the motorcycle jacket—and wishing I could figure out how to wear it without looking like a way-too-nice girl in wanna be wolf’s clothing. Can you help?

Sincerely,

Dear Ms. Good Girl,

I can definitely relate. Oh how I wanted to be part of the crowd that teased their hair to skyscraper heights (God bless Aqua Net!), rimmed their eyes in electric blue, and wore their boyfriends’ motorcyle jackets over painted-on striped jeans and white capezios. Thankfully these days you don’t have to the type that gets caught “smoking in the girl’s room” to work a bad boy jacket, and today’s wide range of motorcycle jackets are surprisingly versatile. Throw on one of the many leather versions of the jacket over a soft, pretty dress. With strappy heels and some sparkles at ear and wrist, you’ll come off as edgily elegant. Just make sure that the jacket is somewhat fitted and cut for a woman’s frame; in this case, you really don’t want to look like you’ve dipped into your boyfriend’s closet.

back to school by ·AnaLiCia♥ featuring Donna Karan bags

For a more casual look, try a colored jacket over a loose-but-not-too-loose dress or skirt with flats. Stay away from anything too short or skin-tight (unless you’re Kate Moss or the Olsen twins and can make anything look chic rather than cheap).

You also can’t go wrong with the classic jacket and jeans combo. Go for straight legs so the look isn’t sloppy, and add some grown-up baubles for a look that’s more sexy-chic than biker chick. If the leather and denim combo is a little too rough-edged for you, no worries. Today’s take on the motorcycle jacket comes in a variety of fabrics—from soft denim to cozy knit. You’re bound to find a version that brings out your particular va va va voom.

Dear Editor–

To keep my body healthy, I’ve always got my gym bag. To keep the planet healthy, I bring lunch in a reusable lunch bag. Then of course there’s my purse for my wallet, keys, company i.d. I know it’s uber easy to go from day to evening if I just carry an extra pair of shoes, a statement necklace, and an evening wrap. Trouble is I’m out of hands and bags! Please help lighten my load.

Sincerely,
Bag Lady

Dear Bag Lady,

I confess that I am one of those that espouses the theory that all one needs is a pair of Jimmy Choos, a statement piece or two or three, and a swoon-worthy, preferably sparkly topper to get your after-hours on. That being said, I understand why you don’t exactly want to show up at cocktails channeling your inner sherpa. Thank goodness for Myrda Monasterial and Eloisa Serrano, the designing duo behind Revelation by M.E. They not only craft their line to do double-duty, but their site also features each garment styled for day and night so day-to-evening is easy peasy.

Don’t tell the folks at Jimmy Choo I said this, but you can also skip the stilettos entirely (who says a woman’s feet shouldn’t be comfortable during the cocktail hour) and instead add a few key pieces of bold jewelry—along with smoldery eyes and kiss-me lipstick—to amp up your look without bulking up your load. Try a sculpted cuff and stacking rings from Tammy Antoinette’s Painted Metal collection or splurge on a selection from Dori Csengeri’s line of embroidered necklaces and earrings. The right piece of jewelry can make even the most sedate sweater set suddenly sexy.

Last thing to do? Ditch all those bags at the nearest coat check–remember you want to turn heads, not dislocate your shoulder.

Stylishly yours,
As someone who danced to Cyndi Lauper’s “Time after Time” at my senior prom, is it possible to stay on trend during this 80s reemergence without looking like I refuse to grow up?

Sincerely,
Desperately Seeking Style

Dear Desperate:

As a woman of a certain age, I completely feel your pain. I personally have no wish to revisit any part of my youth that involved Aqua Net, Dippity Do, or electric blue eyeliner. I loved my teens and twenties, but the truth is I’d never want to give up all the hard-won balance I’ve matured into. And that’s the key to being both classic and au courant during this (ongoing) 80s redux—balancing 80s details with contemporary silhouettes. Try a studded bootie or an embellished, sportyish LBD if you want to revisit your Sid Vicious crush. Or girls can still have fun by punching up a neutral outfit with a kool aid-colored tote or primping in a Pucci-esque A-line. Leave the bulky shoulder pads in syndication heaven with Krystle Carrington, but feel free to order up a season’s worth of embellished-shoulder blouses and sweaters.

You may have noticed that I’ve yet to mention the “L” word—leggings. Just say no to anything cropped, at all sheer, or that comes in a package labeled “footless tights.” Just say yes to ankle-length, opaque leggings with a fabric weight approximately equal to that of your favorite pair of skinny jeans. (And really, do I honestly need to even mention how I feel about stirrup pants?) As for toppers, keep the fit body conscious but not too tight, and for goodness sake, cover that derriere!

As for those other 80s stalwarts—jumpsuits and harem pants—unless you’re uni-monikered (think Beyonce) or ultra-lithe (hello Kate Moss), this humble editor’s opinion is that one should look, sigh longingly, and leave those bad boys on the runway where they belong.

Now that, my friends, is how this woman of a certain age busts a move.

Dear Scared–

When in doubt about the statement you’re making at work, always use your “inside” voice. In other words, the key to wearing a bib necklace–or any other attention-getting necklace–Monday through Friday is to keep the rest of your outfit simple. Think solid-colored tees and tanks, preferably with a higher neckline so the fabric forms a nice backdrop to the necklace and tones down the formality a bit. If you are in the mood for a little pattern, keep it on the bottom half in similar colors to your necklace, so your jewelry and clothing complement rather than compete with each other.

I think bib necklaces also add great sparkle under a monochromatic suit. Try a demure shawl or portrait collar, so you don’t have to wear a layering piece, and the suit lapels can act as a frame for the sparkler. And unless you’re heading to a wedding or other fancy fete, go for matte rather than sheen in your suiting fabric.

I Love You by TheBradlo featuring Vince

Finally, steer clear of any other jewelry, even if you are whipping out your necklace for a soiree. (Engagement and wedding rings are, of course, the exception to the rule.) I promise you that your piercings won’t close up if you skip earrings this one time, and you can tell the time just as easily from your cell phone (or someone else’s wrist) as from your watch.

I never thought I’d do this, but I’m going to borrow a phrase from Forest Gump and leave you with this last piece of advice for working these eyecatchers into everyday–simple is as simple does. And you dear one, now know the trick for being simply stunning!

Dear Oligo Editor-

I’m engaged and couldn’t be happier about my marrying the man of my dreams; but the stress of planning a wedding has me on the verge of a serious bridezilla moment at least five times a day! My newest crisis is picking a dress that all six of my bridesmaids will love and look great in. Throw in the fact that they’re all different heights, sizes, complexions, etc., and I’m at a COMPLETE loss. Help!
— Bride to Be

Dear BTB-

Congrats to you and your future hubby on the engagement—we know you’ll make a ravishing couple! And though the stress leading up to the big day may tempt you to pull a Britney and elope in Vegas, there is a light at the end of the wedding planning tunnel—a fabulous soiree where you’re the center of attention and officially become the Mrs. You’ll look amazing, and there are several ways to make sure your bridal party does, too.

While many brides insist on having the entire bridal party wearing the same dress, being open to letting each girl pick her own style can ease some of your dress shopping woes. Even with different frocks, a uniform look can be achieved by picking similar fabrics and colors. If your budget permits, look into hiring a seamstress that can whip up a custom design for each girl. Also, Designers like twobirds and Butter by Nadia offer dresses that can be wrapped in several different ways for look that both cohesive and individual.

Another option is to consider a non-traditional look like a cocktail length gown or a basic A-line dress. Keep in mind that simple designs are more likely to flatter all your bridesmaids, whether they’re short, tall, super thin or curvy. Your choice of fabric is also key. Satin and silk are notoriously unforgiving, so consider fabrics that are kinder to female frame, like jersey or taffeta.

Try not to let all the wedding hoopla drive you loco—I’m sure it will be picture perfect. Happy shopping, and may and your sweetheart live happily ever after.

Dear Oligo Editor,

I’m a recent college graduate and I just landed my first grown-up job (yay!) I’ll be working as a junior associate at a PR agency. I’m VERY excited, but unfortunately, my professional wardrobe is nonexistent and my bank account leaves much to be desired. Any suggestions for a few budget friendly ensembles for the office? Thanks! –working girl

Dear WG-
Kudos on the new gig! I’m sure you’ll be fabulous! And as for dressing the part without breaking the bank, a few pieces that you can mix and match will have you ready for the office (and possibly happy hour afterwards!) in no time.

Office by Leah Faye featuring Christian Louboutin shoes

A pencil skirt in khaki or black can be paired with a flouncy blouse, classic collared shirt, or camisole and cardigan. This versatile number can also be paired with tights for a great winter or fall look.

A pair of closed-toe heels is also essentially. You’ll likely get the most use out of a dark brown, black, or burgundy pair. Lucky for you, the PR biz tends to be more stylish than other professional industries, so don’t shy away from rounded toes, chunky heels, or even a strappy Mary Jane.

I’m a huge fan of cropped blazers and short-sleeved jackets—I consider them the modern girl’s answer to the basic blazer. Not only are they cute and work appropriate, but every designer from Italy to L.A. is churning them out, making it easy to find one that fits your budget.

Pair your basic shirt and jackets with a fun, colorful top. Button downs are a classy safe bet, but you can also look great in frilly floral top, cowl neck shell, or wrap shirt.

When shopping for work, look for fabrics that can you can wear year-round, like cottons and poly blends. Also, remember that accessories like waist belts, broaches, and scarves and completely re-vamp an existing look.

Good luck with your grown-up J-O-B, and if it’s okay with your boss, add us the guest list the next your company hosts a big bash!

Dear Oligo Editor:

I’ve got a dear friend’s birthday coming and up and I’m at a loss as to what to gift her. She is a girlie girl, statuesque and always in vogue. Sounds easy right? Well, she is also has it all and claims she doesn’t want a thing. What to do? –Gifting Goddess

Dear GG,

When you say your statuesque friend has it all, do you mean a closet full of designer duds, a dream job, and a hot boyfriend on the side? If so, I’m a bit too envious to offer any advice, so take hers and don’t get her a thing. JUST KIDDING!

I too have found myself scouring my fave department stores and boutiques in search of the perfect present, only to come up short. However, after years of buying gifts for my besties, I’ve noticed that jewelry is always a hit. Every girly girl loves a new addition to her collection of accessories. Plus, taking the time to find something you know she’ll adore is thoughtful nod to your friendship, and she’ll think of her super-stylish gal pal (i.e. you!) every time she wears it.

Antique jewelry is making its way onto shelves everywhere this season. A big cuff, pair of drop earrings, or even a vintage-esque barrette are timeless pieces she’ll wear forever. Don’t be afraid to check out off-the radar antique shops or even a consignment boutique—they usually house a great collection of to-die-for jewels you won’t find anywhere else.

And if you haven’t already, you must take a peek at Gina Cartwright’s Charmed Circle collection. Her bracelets, necklaces, and charms are in a word … adorable! Inspired by treasured moments spent with her family, each piece is handcrafted by Cartwright, whose love of jewelry is matched by her passion for gift-giving. I’m a huge fan of the “Words to Live By Bangles,” engraved with quotes from Ghandi and Coco Chanel. The chandelier charm is equally chic, and can be worn on a charm bracelet or necklace. Both come in sterling silver and gold-plated sterling silver, which is perfect since many ladies (myself included!) have strong feelings about their signature metal. (I’m a silver girl in case you were wondering.)

You can see (and shop!) the entire Charmed Circle collection Online. Don’t be afraid to send the link out in an Email blast when your birthday rolls around!

Dear Oligo Editor:

I’m going on vacation with my boyfriend of 5 months. He is taking me to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a week. Can you give me any pointers for looking chic but casual but sexy and also like I’m not trying too hard? Please help! -Chic Vacationer

Dear CV,

Before I delve into to dressing details, let me first say that if your boyfriend is whisking you to Cabo, you’ve clearly already dazzled him with your choice of stateside ensembles. That being said, my first piece of advice (which covers the “not trying too hard” bit) is to stick with your personal style. Mix and match your favorite pieces with a few new items you would add to your wardrobe even if a sizzling hot vacay to Cabo wasn’t in your future. Here are some tips for looking your best while south of the border.

Dress(es) to Impress
An assortment of airy summer dresses is a must. A long, bright maxi is a great choice, and can easily take you from day to night. Whether strolling through a promenade or sharing a dinner beach side, you’ll look cooler than the ocean breeze in this number. You can spice things up with a sexy, yet casual cami- dress, and be comfortably cute in a smoked tube dress—perfect four lounging poolside or taking a walk on the beach.

Vacay to Mexico by Leah Faye featuring JUICY COUTURE

Best Foot Forward
You’re going to Cabo—not the Cannes Film Festival—so keep the pointy-toe stilettos and bejeweled spiked heels at home. Instead, opt for fashionable flip-flops, wedge espadrilles, and chunky, platform wooden heels. All three are comfortable, super-stylish, and look great when paired with a summer dress.

Bathing Beauty
While bathing suites are (hopefully) the skimpiest duds you’ll ever wear in public, these barely-there get-ups are perhaps the most essential part of a girl’s vacation wardrobe. Go for a suite that is fashionable and functional—one that flatters your figure and looks great whether you’re sipping Margaritas at the swim-up bar or playing Marco Polo. Cut-out one-pieces are all the rage and can be found to fit every body type (and budget!) You can minimize the va va voom factor of these hot little numbers by choosing one in a pale, pastel color, as opposed to the ever popular black. I’m also a huge fan of ultra-girly ruffled bikini bottoms. Nothing says “I’m stylish but I don’t take myself too seriously” more than a cute, frilly bikini.

Vacay to Mexico 2 by Leah Faye featuring casadei shoes

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize
When paired with a simple summer dress, the right accessories can do wonders for your look. Bring a set of bangles, a few pairs of chandelier earrings, and cocktail ring for nights out on the town. Long necklaces that you can layer, or wrap around your neck twice for a double-stranded look will add a hint of drama to basic looks. A canvas tote will be perfect for the beach and storing souvenirs, and a sleek clutch is ideal for evening and late-night outings.

Have a great time in Mexico, and don’t forget to pack your sunscreen. Sunburns are never in style.

Dear Oligo Editor,

I just moved from a city with cold, windy summers to a city with beastly, hot summers. I’m used to always carrying a coat no matter the season, I have no idea what to wear in my new sweltering city. Please Help!—Hot in the South

Dear H in the S,

I feel your pain. As a transplant from San Francisco to Houston, I know exactly what you are going through. My first piece of advice is to hydrate and seek refuge in air-conditioning whenever possible. Clearly, it isn’t possible to not leave the house for three months, so here’s what I wear to stay cool in the summer:

1. Natural Fibers

I went on a shopping spree at American Apparel right before the heat hit. I got some flowy cotton skirts, shirt dresses, and airy tees. Cotton and linen are your best bets during the balmy summer months.

2. Light Colors

I am a black-a-holic. I love the look of black and my wardrobe consists of countless pairs of leggings, tees, and dresses. I have a very hard time retiring my dark pieces during the summer. However, it’s a fact that whites, khakis, and lighter shades keep you much, much cooler than blacks, browns, and blues.

3. Dresses, Dresses, and More Dresses

Nothing keeps me cooler than a flowy summer dress. Stick to natural fibers and opt for short or long and loose summer sun dresses. Plus there are an endless number of stylish mini-dresses that keep you cool and fashionable.

4. Say NO to Layers

I always wear a tank under shirts, dresses, and just about anything. I’ve had to break up with my undershirt habit during the hot Houston summer as this additional layer brings additional beads of sweat to my brow.

5. Shorts Are In

There is nothing sexier than short shorts and an oversized shirt. I love a pair of denim cut-offs (a timeless DIY wardrobe must!) paired with a cute plaid work shirt. Dressier shorts paired with a tank top are perf for a night on the town.

While it’s fabulous to be the most stylish chick at the party, there’s nothing cute about being a sweat monster. Think comfort and cool when dressing for the summer heat.
