While the best and worst dressed celeb lists get circulated from Sunday’s Emmy Awards, here are a few dos and don’ts we can learn next time we have a fancy affair to attend.

Don’t wear something you can’t rock. January Jones’ Versace electric blue gown, was reminiscent of a big hooped costume gown that wasn’t flattering, however what made it worse was that she looked uncomfortable, not confident, and had difficulty walking. If you can’t walk properly in your dress, its probably the first sign that you should choose another option.

Do wear something that flatters your shape and makes a statement. Lea Michelle was by far one of the best dressed at the Emmy’s this year. Her sweetheart cut gown was perfect to accentuate her bust, and the form fitting mid section elongated her body, while the elegant ruffles added immense drama making a big statement on the red carpet.

Don’t blend into your dress. While Claire Danes always looks beautiful, she was muted by the flesh-colored sequins of her Armani Prive dress. If it werent for

thousands of dazzling sequins, you might not be able to tell the dress apart from her skin. A slightly different color, or a light spray tan could brighten up your look and make you glow.

Do choose a color that makes you “pop.” Emmanuelle Chriqui’s dress is not only cut impeccably, but the color contrast against her skin just makes her pop, making her look radiant while wearing a nude color.

Don’t look like the mother of the bride. Kim Kardashian is usually admired for fashion, the same with designer house Marchesa, but at the Emmy’s Kim looked matronly and uptight. The Marchesa draping is beautiful, but the dress makes Kim look

Do dress your age and add a modern twist. Julia Ormond isn’t a young-twenty something, but she looked it in an Escada deep red architectural dress. The bold detail at the top of her dress gave her a fresh young look that kept the dress clean yet

interesting, all while complimenting her body shape and dressing appropriately. Yay Julia!

Next time you choose an evening gown for an event keep these tips in mind, but don’t forget the most important thing of all: always add your personal style!

Most of the time when one thinks of a long denim skirt, disaster comes to mind. But Jessica Alba defines the odds and takes a denim a-line over the knee skirt and makes it SoHo chic.

How does she pull this off? Simple. Trendy accessories such as a skinny braided belt, gladiator sandals, cat eye sunglasses, and a brooch pendant necklace really pull the almost matronly skirt into NY style.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Faith Hill NYC Street Style

New York street style at its best. Gwyneth Paltrow and Faith Hill looked like the girls next door in casual day wear while dining out. Gwyn’s style is bohemian inspired with silk harem pants, loose razorback tank, and thick centered gladiator sandals. Its trendy, but includes very basic items.

Faith shows an unusually edgier side with a cotton button down shirt, tattered jean shorts, and rocker combat boots. The boots essentially make this outfit stand out with style. The Rachel Zoe Project returns to Bravo this week, and with all the talk, I cant help but be reminded of Rachel Zoe and her iconic oversized “sunnies” look. The over-sized sunglasses trend has been played out by other celebs such as Nicole Richie, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and the infamous Jackie Kennedy-Onassis.

Over-sized sunglasses are one of my favorite accessories since its so embellished and over-the-top. I have yet to see this accessory not compliment someone’s face shape, so test it out and see if it fits your style.

Even though this navy knit has an embroidered neckline and sleeve, it would even be chic with out the detail because of how it drapes Reese’s silhouette. The key to wearing a tshirt dress is to not have it form fitting at all, but have it fit at the neck and sleeves, and outline your body. Adding wedges or stilettos will make your legs stand out and be the focal point. With just the right dress form you can make your outfit extremely simplistic and head out the door without a second thought.

In the fashion capitol of the world, why shouldn’t Blake Lively want to shine in bold and bright colors as she did in Paris last week? This statement combination immediately got my attention with its cobalt trouser pants, and bright embellished shoulder metallic blazer.

Its almost an eighties version, but with a modern twist. The gold studded Brian Atwood shoes add a hint of rock and roll to her look, while the nautical gold cuff and cocktail ring add some femininity. This is a great summer “going-out” outfit that would be great when there is a cool summer night’s breeze. The metallic blazer could last long through the summer season and make more use when fall rolls around with its warm neutral tones. Don’t worry, the bright blue trousers can make it into next spring too! I love Blake’s look as it offers clean lines and bold and interesting colors!

Usually, Katie Holmes is known for her all-American girl preppy style. But this week, she’s taken her classic-Americana image and added a seventies twist. A button down plaid shirt paired with wide-leg jeans makes this an updated vintage-inspired look. Adding some faded over-sized sunglasses and heels creates just the right touch.

The main item that makes Katie’s outfit reminiscent of the 70′s is the wide leg pant. You can also pair printed tank tops with the same pants and a belt to have a summer-friendly seventies look. But, if you are on the shorter height side, its better to wear a wedge heel or any slight heel to lengthen your legs.
