Dear Oligo Editor: Will I ever find the perfect bridesmaid dresses?

    Dear Oligo Editor-

I’m engaged and couldn’t be happier about my marrying the man of my dreams; but the stress of planning a wedding has me on the verge of a serious bridezilla moment at least five times a day! My newest crisis is picking a dress that all six of my bridesmaids will love and look great in. Throw in the fact that they’re all different heights, sizes, complexions, etc., and I’m at a COMPLETE loss. Help!
    — Bride to Be

    Dear BTB-

Congrats to you and your future hubby on the engagement—we know you’ll make a ravishing couple! And though the stress leading up to the big day may tempt you to pull a Britney and elope in Vegas, there is a light at the end of the wedding planning tunnel—a fabulous soiree where you’re the center of attention and officially become the Mrs.  You’ll look amazing, and there are several ways to make sure your bridal party does, too.

While many brides insist on having the entire bridal party wearing the same dress, being open to letting each girl pick her own style can ease some of your dress shopping woes. Even with different frocks, a uniform look can be achieved by picking similar fabrics and colors. If your budget permits, look into hiring a seamstress that can whip up a custom design for each girl. Also, Designers like twobirds and Butter by Nadia offer dresses that can be wrapped in several different ways for look that both cohesive and individual.

Another option is to consider a non-traditional look like a cocktail length gown or a basic A-line dress. Keep in mind that simple designs are more likely to flatter all your bridesmaids, whether they’re short, tall, super thin or curvy. Your choice of fabric is also key.  Satin and silk are notoriously unforgiving, so consider fabrics that are kinder to female frame, like jersey or taffeta.

Try not to let all the wedding hoopla drive you loco—I’m sure it will be picture perfect. Happy shopping, and may and your sweetheart live happily ever after.

Dear Oligo Editor: Office Style on a Budget?

    July 13th, 2009

    Dear Oligo Editor,

I’m a recent college graduate and I just landed my first grown-up job (yay!) I’ll be working as a junior associate at a PR agency. I’m VERY excited, but unfortunately, my professional wardrobe is nonexistent and my bank account leaves much to be desired. Any suggestions for a few budget friendly ensembles for the office? Thanks! –working girl

    Dear WG-
Kudos on the new gig! I’m sure you’ll be fabulous! And as for dressing the part without breaking the bank, a few pieces that you can mix and match will have you ready for the office (and possibly happy hour afterwards!) in no time.

A pencil skirt in khaki or black can be paired with a flouncy blouse, classic collared shirt, or camisole and cardigan. This versatile number can also be paired with tights for a great winter or fall look.

A pair of closed-toe heels is also essentially. You’ll likely get the most use out of a dark brown, black, or burgundy pair. Lucky for you, the PR biz tends to be more stylish than other professional industries, so don’t shy away from rounded toes, chunky heels, or even a strappy Mary Jane.

I’m a huge fan of cropped blazers and short-sleeved jackets—I consider them the modern girl’s answer to the basic blazer. Not only are they cute and work appropriate, but every designer from Italy to L.A. is churning them out, making it easy to find one that fits your budget.

Pair your basic shirt and jackets with a fun, colorful top. Button downs are a classy safe bet, but you can also look great in frilly floral top, cowl neck shell, or wrap shirt.

When shopping for work, look for fabrics that can you can wear year-round, like cottons and poly blends. Also, remember that accessories like waist belts, broaches, and scarves and completely re-vamp an existing look.

Good luck with your grown-up J-O-B, and if it’s okay with your boss, add us the guest list the next your company hosts a big bash!

Dear Oligo Editor: What do I get for the girl who has everything?!

    July 1st, 2009

    Dear Oligo Editor:

I’ve got a dear friend’s birthday coming and up and I’m at a loss as to what to gift her. She is a girlie girl, statuesque and always in vogue. Sounds easy right? Well, she is also has it all and claims she doesn’t want a thing. What to do? –Gifting Goddess

    Dear GG,

When you say your statuesque friend has it all, do you mean a closet full of designer duds, a dream job, and a hot boyfriend on the side? If so, I’m a bit too envious to offer any advice, so take hers and don’t get her a thing. JUST KIDDING!

charm3I too have found myself scouring my fave department stores and boutiques in search of the perfect present, only to come up short. However, after years of buying gifts for my besties, I’ve noticed that jewelry is always a hit. Every girly girl loves a new addition to her collection of accessories. Plus, taking the time to find something you know she’ll adore is thoughtful nod to your friendship, and she’ll think of her super-stylish gal pal (i.e. you!) every time she wears it.

Antique jewelry is making its way onto shelves everywhere this season. A big cuff, pair of drop earrings, or even a vintage-esque barrette are timeless pieces she’ll wear forever. Don’t be afraid to check out off-the radar antique shops or even a consignment boutique—they usually house a great collection of to-die-for jewels you won’t find anywhere else.

And if you haven’t already, you must take a peek at Gina Cartwright’s Charmed charmsCircle collection. Her bracelets, necklaces, and charms are in a word … adorable! Inspired by treasured moments spent with her family, each piece is handcrafted by Cartwright, whose love of jewelry is matched by her passion for gift-giving. I’m a huge fan of the “Words to Live By Bangles,” engraved with quotes from Ghandi and Coco Chanel. The chandelier charm is equally chic, and can be worn on a charm bracelet or necklace. Both come in sterling silver and gold-plated sterling silver, which is perfect since many ladies (myself included!) have strong feelings about their signature metal. (I’m a silver girl in case you were wondering.)

You can see (and shop!) the entire Charmed Circle collection Online.  Don’t be afraid to send the link out in an Email blast when your birthday rolls around!
