FASHION BY THE RULES: Glove Love

November 29, 2010

A glove is a garment covering the hand. Gloves have separate sheaths or openings for each finger and the thumb; if there is an opening but no covering sheath for each finger they are called “fingerless gloves.” Fingerless gloves with one large opening rather than individual openings for each finger are sometimes called gauntlets. Gloves which cover the entire hand or fist but do not have separate finger openings or sheaths are called mittens.

With Thanksgiving here and gone, the temperatures will certainly be on the decline and that means you will surely need something to keep those hands warm once the winter cold really sets in. As with everything else that has been discussed these past few weeks, gloves can give us a bit on insight about their wearer. For instance, you might be the fashionista type who wants gloves to match each piece of outerwear with beauty being the key attribute while we may have the skier who would rather just use their ski gloves every day and then there are those who really want warm hands and dispense with all worries about appearance and go strictly for warmth and no attention paid to looks.

So, which one are you? The color coordinated fashion first type, the utilitarian, the lazy type with one pair suits all or a combination of all. The runways for the past year have been full of gloves for each season which harkens back to the 40’s and 50’s when elbow length and opera length glove were de rigeur and no lady would be caught dead without her white write lengths when venturing out for lunch.
As you might have guessed, this examiner is all in favor of all types of accessories for men and women. It’s the quickest way to update a look and also the most fun, let your imagination run free.

FASHION BY THE RULES: “Cheaters”…Sunglasses

November 24, 2010

According to Wikipedia …Sunglasses or sun glasses are a form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight and high-energy visible light from damaging or discomforting the eyes. They can sometimes also function as a visual aid, as variously termed spectacles or glasses exist, featuring lenses that are colored, polarized or darkened. In the early 20th century they were also known as sun cheaters (cheaters being an American slang term for glasses).

Today, the question that begs to be asked is “What do your sunglasses say about you?” The available variety of “shades” is endless when you think there are stores(Solstice, Sunglass Hut) devoted to them, web sites(by brand) devoted to them and a never ending amount of manufacturers who license new designer names almost on a daily basis. Most sunglass folks own several pairs, while there are even those who have a wardrobe of “shades” to “go with” every mood and fashion statement. Next time you are out on the streets, have a look around at everyone and see what you can find out about these people.

The photographs demonstrate that every pair of sunglasses has something to say about their owner, whether you are a racer, a celebrity, the nerdy type, a classicist, a skier, a fashionista, or just plain trying to keep the sun out of your eyes. Also, what can be gleaned is that the style does not necessarily dictate the price since today they are sunglasses from under $10.00 to ones that are several hundreds of dollars, can you tell which is which?

FASHION BY THE RULES: Get Booted!!

November 15, 2010

This is the season of the boot, let there be no mistake about it. The runways for the current fall season were loaded with boots – boots of every description, boots of every height, boots with every heel height and boots of almost every conceivable material.

All you need to do is look at what is happening in the streets of New York City and every other city in the country. Look in any shoe store or shoe department whether it is JCPenny or Bergdorf Goodman, Kohl’s to Christian Louboutin, every shoe site on line, and all you see front and center is BOOTS!! Yes there are the de rigeur spike heels of dizzying heights but boots of every silhouette are the “shoe stars” of the season and they are the “must have” item for your wardrobe. One of the greatest advantages of this fall’s must have item is that there is such a huge variety, you don’t have to teeter along in stiletto over the knee suedes when you can have ankle length with a wedge. In other words, you might even buy a comfortable pair this year and as opposed to buying a single trend look.

When you are out in search, which if you haven’t found your ideal pair yet, you are in for a lot of disappointments as these boots, of every price, are literally walking out of stores. By the way, this epidemic of boot fever includes your cowboy boots, a rejuvenated Frye boot, Uggs, Hunters, and even those old Doc Martens.
