Dear Oligo Editor: Party Dress In No Time
December 26, 2008
Dear Oligo Editor:
Christmas shopping is not the only thing I had put of. ( I did that the day before!) I also have not had a chance to look up and consider party dresses for my New Year’s Eve bash with friends. I want to look put-together but somehow pull it off with minimal effort..er, time. Do you have any tips on how to do this….. and quickly?
Sincerely,
Ready to party in no time
Dear No Time,
Wouldn’t it be nice if someone thought of selling a New Year’s Eve Party Dress kit? Hmmm…I think I’m onto something here! In any case, time is of essence here. The clock is ticking and you should shop wisely to pull it all together without a hitch.
First things first! You need to take inventory of what you own already. Go through your jewelry box, shoes and existing clutches. Do you see a theme coming together? Look for matching sets of accessories that will make your shopping trip shorter. This step will help guide your party dress quest.
With hundreds of dresses to pick from you can narrow down the style, length and color before you even leave your house. If you are lacking in the accessory department, no worries. Still come prepared with a look in mind and dont waver! If you have a nice pair of shoes and not much else. Then go with that. Look for only dresses that compliment those shoes.
Leaving your house prepared is most of the battle. You can do that by narrowing down your favorite and possible stores to visit to only three. Make sure you pick places within your budget and a wide selection. This will make the process infinitely easier.
Once there, grab as many options as you can carry into the dressing room. You never know which is going to be the final dress. What may look so so on the rack may look stunning on you. If in doubt, grab it!
Another tip is to bring some of your accessories along on your shopping trip. This will ensure you try on the entire ensemble at the same time before you make a purchase.
Good luck! Have fun and most importantly…….have a wonderful New Year’s Eve!
What To Do With Bad Gifts
December 25, 2008
Unmentionable Auntie struck again. Be it a birthday, Christmas, or just a package of love, we can always count on that beloved relative to give us that one special gift. I know the practice, strength, and endurance it takes to execute an Oscar worthy“I looovvve it!” over reindeer embroider socks. However, the tricky part is what comes next. After the ornaments are wrapped and put away and the tree is hauled to the trash, what do we do with those unwanted and just plain ugly gifts? (without hauling them to the trash too)
Re-gift
Everybody I know has that secret drawer in the depths of their closet. Seinfeld may have coined the term over a decade ago, but I assure you regifting has been going on for centuries. When regifting, stop and ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this gift regiftable? If it’s handmade or personalized (ie: monogrammed hand-towels) the answer is no. (Unless of course you have a friend with the same initials, then go for it!)
- Is it in good condition? Make sure the box isn’t torn, damaged or that Baby Jimmy didn’t gnaw on it during Christmas breakfast.
- Will I get caught? Do not regift if the recipient knows the original gift-giver. This is the cardinal regifting rule. If not followed, this can result in a possibly embarrassing confrontation. No one wants that.
Wrap it nicely, and make sure you can handle the backlash in case you get caught. Regifting is not for wimps.
Donate
There are over half a million federally recognized charities that accept donations. From the Salvation Army to your local Homeless Shelter, there is always somebody who will appreciate a brand new sweater (even if it has a bough of holly running across the chest). With more in need this year than ever before, it’s an ideal time to help those who are a bit less fortunate (and get yourself a sweet tax deduction too). Its the selfless thing to do!

Grin and Bear It
This is usually always true for homemade, handmade, and personalized gifts. If Granny knitted you a poncho—even a neon orange one—you have to keep it. Wear it to Granny’s house on her birthday just to make her smile. If the gift-giver clearly put a lot of thought and care into the gift, keep it and use it in their presence. That’s just the classy thing to do.
Clothing Swap
Host or attend a clothing swap with unwanted gifts. With the economy out back digging around in the trash cans, now’s the perfect time to save some Ben Franks. A clothing swap is a small-scale swap meet with all of your buddies. Invite your friends over and ask them to bring clothes they no longer wear. Everyone then has the chance to pick and choose what they want to take home. This is a good time to see which one of your friends has bad taste.
Sell it on eBay
I know I could use some extra cash. I know I’ve done it before. The most beautiful way to get rid of unwanted gifts is to sell them. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure …
Bad Gift Emporium
“We have lots of BAD gifts. Really BAD gifts. So bad they’re actually considered good (at being bad). Please … add your own, or snag someone else’s. Because one man’s bad gift is another man’s bad gift … in a good kind of way.” A picture says a thousand—scratch that, a million words—check out badgiftemporium.com.
When it comes to bad and unwanted gifts, it’s hard to remember, but never forget that it’s the thought that counts. Furthermore, there’s always next year …and payback’s a b@%ch!
