No happy medium, eh? I don't think the album was horrible. I just think that Illa J needs some lyrical tutelage and should consider trying a little harder when he sings. Again, make this an instrumental album and I'll bump that ish 'til it goes into style. :D

Okay. I hate this C.D. It was really, really, really bad. I have to say that I feel sorry for Dilla. He must be turning in his grave. Illa Jay not only is the worst rapper to my ears, but he does his brothers beats no type of justice. To the above commentator you must have had cotton in your ears because if I listened to that C.D 40 more minutes I would have plugged my ears with something too. No disrespect to illa Jay, but he really needs to think about another type of career.

Well, I certainly value and respect your opinion, and I don't completely disagree. In fact, I felt good buying the album, if for no other reason, just because I feel like I owe a lot to Dilla, through the inspiration he's given me in my music, let alone all the outstanding music.

When I bought this album, I was hoping and praying that it would be really great. Somehow, I don't think that Dilla got all the praise he deserved, and I was secretly hoping that Illa J would crank out some good music over Dilla's beats and eventually become really good at emulating his production style. So I listened to it for about a week and sadly concluded that I was a little disappointed, even though I already recognized that Illa J's previous works had shown little evidence of creative rhyme schemes, alliteration, internal rhyme, polysyllabic rhymes, similes, metaphors, and the like.

If you notice in my article, I certainly gave a good deal of praise to Illa J. In fact, I gave his album the same rating as I gave Q-Tip's album the week before! (Make sure and check out that review, too, if you haven't already) ;) I actually like both albums, and I stand by my assessment that each is good enough to garner about three stars. I'd say that this puts them in about the top 20%, which is, from my perspective, not bad at all.

Thanks for checking us out and feel free to chime in from time to time when you feel compelled to do so. :D

Hey Controversy
I totally disagree with you here, this album is refreshing, sweet and simple, with a comforting tone of hip-hop we haven't heard in years. I don't think you even described one track specifically, which you really should have to give your piece more dynamic. But hey you wrote it! The funny thing is that you prob. didn't even give this album a good listen, which is your lost. For anyone who is wondering what this album really sounds like please disregard the article above and take 40 mins to listen to this album and i promise you'll be in a better mood then before you heard it, and it's not just the Dilla beats. The album has a carrying on of the torch feel to it and it's done in a real modest way. The maturity of illa j has been expressed along with timeless beats makes for one of the most solid albums (from start to finish) of the year!!! And that's the double truth Ruth!!!!
